Travel Companions

Definition: a travel companion is someone who I have traveled with in more than one place, for more than one day. He/she is someone with whom I have slept in the same place, usually either sharing a room, tent, campervan, or patch of ground in a bush hut. He/she and I made a decision to travel together rather than being together by coincidence. We've journeyed together between places. He/she must also be a traveler, and not a local friend that took me for a trip.

  • Fred - my only long-term travel companion. We traveled through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, and part of Laos together, for 5 months, starting in March 2004. Somehow we managed not to kill each other. We proudly called ourselves "The Stingiest Bastards in Asia" as we budget backpacked from place to place. Also pretty much my only male travel companion. This guy from Sweden and I first me on our tour of the Great Ocean Road in Australia, ended up on the same Outback Tour, and later decided to take a tour of the Northern Territory together.

  • Dave & Denise - sort of travel companions. I sort of followed this pair from Alaska around Lima, Peru for the first few days of my trip, and until I got a better hold on my Spanish.

  • Meike - probably my first real travel companion on this trip. We traveled from Puerto Natales, Chile, to El Calafate, Argentina, and then returned to Chile to spend 5 days hiking and camping in Torres del Paine [ 2 ] National Park.

  • Marina - Oi Amiga! my good friend from Brazil and I visited Chiloe [ 2 3 ] island in Chile together for 3 days or so.

  • Fiona - from Santiago, Chile to Valparaiso together for a few days.

  • Ana - sort of a travel companion. A very close friend, nonetheless. We hung out in Morro de Sao Paulo, later in Rio de Janiero, and also in Brotas.

  • Tomoko - we took a van I rented in Invercargill, in New Zealand and spent three days touring the Catlins together. I also got our van stuck in snow and mud at least two times.

  • Natasha - my longest-term travel partner so far. We toured the North Island of New Zealand together for 12 days, sleeping in the back of my campervan. Our time together took us from Wellington to Rotorua, with many stops in between.

  • My Parents - my wonderful parents came and visited me not once, but twice, in Bolivia, and later in New Zealand. The first time we were together for a week, the second time, for a week and a half. They also brought me goodies from back home that are either quite hard or quite expensive to get outside the USA.

  • Ariane & Andrea - two crazy (and sometimes violent) but very lovable Swiss girls whom I accompanied in Australia from Brisbane to Coff's Harbour, and later said my goodbyes to in Sydney.

  • Courtney - sort of a travel companion. more like someone my friend Jonny decided to follow because we liked her. After Jonny left, I went to Kangaroo Island with Courtney and many others on a tour.

  • Andre - sort of a travel companion. We met in Kundiawa in Papua New Guinea and later ran in to each other in Madang. We hung out for a day and visited Kranket Island, and then took the same boat to Wewak.

  • Wendy - a VSO volunteer and friend that I met in Papua New Guinea, we traveled together to Indonesia for a week to visit Jayapura, Sentani, and the Baliem Valley, the home of the Dani people.

  • François - French guy I met at Kawah Ijen, in Indonesia. We continued on to Bali together, and had ourselves a wild night in Kuta.

  • Coco - a beautiful and sweet girl from Korea. We met in Kuala Lumpur, and continued to Penang, and then up to Trang and Krabi, in Thailand, together.

  • Ruth - one way cool English backpacker who I met in Australia, and later managed to reunite with in Thailand. We got drunk in Pattaya for a night and played pool, then headed to Ko Chang for several days, and then back to Bangkok.
